Busy Summer

This summer “vacation” has been super busy for us here at Washtenaw Wool Company!

We have been to many events, vending our yarns; we’ve been building our relationships with our very local yarn shops, Spun and Ophir Yarn & Fiber; and we’ve been working with some new bases to introduce to our to-dye-for fans! Whew!

We are, all three of us, moms with kids out of school and families who want to do things other than play with fleeces, wool, yarn, and dye all day. Some (most) days we are running from one thing to the next, preparing for trips, play dates, market trips, and all kinds of summer excitement.

Heather brought some of our legacy yarns to Minnesota to the science fiction and fantasy convention, CONvergence, where we received a “warm” (heh, sorry…) welcome:photo of the CONvergence yarn auction

In fact, we were told that the volunteers were jockeying over who would announce the auction of our skeins so they would be able to bid on them! We were pleased that our legacy yarns could make their way to new wool homes, in preparation for our permanent base yarns that will be released over the next month. We have been going to the Ypsilanti Farmer’s Market one Tuesday and one Saturday each month. What a fantastic community that market has!  We are having a great time, not only vending our yarn, but also making connections to local farmers.  We got Shetland fleeces recently from both Mark’s Farms & Greenhouse (Britton, MI) as well as Hay Creek Heritage Farms (Pinckney, MI).photo of a Shetland sheep

We are working on the (somewhat onerous, but highly rewarding) task of skirting those fleeces, before sending them to a mill for processing.

We will next be at the Ypsilanti Farmer’s Market on Tuesday August 23rd and Saturday August 27th, and we look forward to chatting with you about your current projects.  We’ve been spinning, knitting, and crocheting while enjoying the outdoors (with a few nibbles of our surrounding vendors’ delicious wares to sustain us.)

We will be at Sandhill Crane Vineyard’s Wine & Wool Festival on Saturday, July 30, from 10am-5pm, and we would love for you to join us! Entry is free and wine tasting is a mere $5. We are excited to take part in this fabulous event — so much so that we’re having our first sale.

The Merlot colorway, a red wine-speckled yarn, is making it’s debut and, as our show special, will be 10% off.  We are also releasing four patterns at the festival, all free with purchase. Those patterns will be available on our website in August. Come and raise a glass, relax, and enjoy a day of luxury and lush-ousness with us.

Can’t make it to the Wine & Wool Festival?  We have a trunk show coming up at Ophir Yarn and Fiber on August 18-20th. More details on the reception to come soon!
