Over the Rainbow Mittens

Washtenaw Wool Co Huron [100% superwash US Merino; 220 yards/201 meters per 100g skein]; color: After the Storm, 1 skein.
US 3 DPNs
Gauge: 5.75 sts and 8 rows per inch in stockinette st.
CO 44 sts
K2 p2 around for 2 in.
K all sts for 1 in.
Round 1: K10, kfb, kfb, k32.
Round 2 and all even rounds: K all.
Round 3: K10, kfb, k2, kfb, k32.
Repeat this increase pattern, including plain knit row, until you have 14 sts increased (56 total). End after an even row.
K10, place 14 sts on a piece of scrap yarn, K32.
K all sts until mitten reaches the top of your pinkie finger.
Round 1: *K5, k2tog; rep from *.
Rounds 2, 4, 6, 8: K all.
Round 3: *K4, k2tog; rep from *.
Round 5: *K3, k2tog; rep from *.
Round 7: *K2, k2tog; rep from *.
Round 9: *K1, k2tog; rep from *.
Round 10: *k2tog; rep from *.
6 sts remain. Cut yarn and draw through remaining sts.
Move 14 sts from scrap yarn to DPNs.
Pick up 6 sts across gap and join in the round.
K all until thumb is 1 in. long.
Round 1: *K3, k2tog; rep from *.
Round 2: *K2, k2tog; rep from *.
Round 3: *K1, k2tog; rep from *.
Round 4: *k2tog; rep from *.
4 sts remain. Cut yarn and draw through remaining sts.
Weave in ends. Put mitten on your hand inside out to help see the gaps at the base of the thumb while you weave in ends.
